The 42km Cape Town Cycle Tour is a newer addition to the iconic event, introduced in 2023 to great success. This shorter route offers a more accessible option for a wider range of cyclists, including beginners, junior riders, and those who prefer a less demanding challenge than the full 109km route. It provides the same exhilarating experience of cycling on fully closed roads while showcasing the beautiful scenery Cape Town is famous for. With safety and inclusivity at its core, the 42km route is the perfect introduction to the world of cycling events, allowing participants to enjoy the thrill of the Cape Town Cycle Tour in a more approachable format.
Enter NowThe 42km route starts exactly where the 109km does, shortly after that event’s final riders have set off. Table Mountain looks over the start chutes on the Grand Parade, under the ramparts of the Castle of Good Hope. Riders head out on Nelson Mandela Boulevard – a decent climb to warm up the legs – before descending past Groote Schuur Hospital, Mostert’s Mill, UCT and on to Paradise Motors. The second challenge of the day is Edinburgh Drive; short and steep, but soon to become Wynberg Hill and a fast, fun ride to the end of the Blue Route freeway. Here, the 109km riders will have peeled left earlier in the morning, but the 42km route does an about-turn and comes back up the M3 past the wine farms of Constantia and Newlands Forest, ultimately cresting above Groote Schuur.
The glorious view across Table Bay, from the mountain to the breakers of Blouberg, will guide riders all the way downhill to the finish in Riebeek Street in the city centre. The finish area for the 42km route is located in Riebeek Street. The finish line will be located 1.8km from the 109km finish at the Green Point Precinct, there will be a marshalled route via Somerset Road and the fan walk for those wanting to ride through to the Cycle Tour finish precinct.
